Safety Tips for Motorcycle Riding in the Rain

The weather hasn’t been the typical bikers ideal the last few days,  but a little rain never stoppep anyone! Views on riding when it’s wet vary from rider to rider; it is possible as long as safety is your top priority. Whether you are new or experienced in the biker world here are some wet weather riding tips for you to brush up on.

1.   Ensure your tries are correct for riding in the rain! Slick tires aren’t going to do you any favors on wet pavemennt.

2. Watch the road! Any metal on the road will have become extra slippery. Manholes and metal plates should be avoided. If you are crossing rail road tracks be sure to straighten your bike before crossing them. Standing water can cause hydroplaning, and loosing traction on a motorcycle can be a scary thing.

3.  Be aware of your distance from other drivers, your braking distance is increased when the road is wet. Slow down and take your time, brake gently.

4. The first rain after a dry spell is the most dangerous. It loosens any oil and dirt on the road. By waiting two hours you give the rain a chance to wash away any oil/dirt that may be a hazard to your driving. If it is only a drizzle the roads will stay slippery.

5. Using a Windshield Water Repellent product helps keep rain off your windshield. It’s an inexpensive addition to your Bike Bag that can make a huge difference in your visibility.

6.  Anything that distracts you is potentially dangerous. Putting on proper wet weather riding clothes before it start to rain ensures your clothes don’t get soggy, and you don’t get cold. High visibility clothing makes it easier for other vehicles to see you. Make sure your rain gear is in good condition and fits properly.
